Why libraries matter, cont’d: “The most beautiful word in the English language”

Happy National Library Workers Day! (And Happy National Library Week.) Here’s an addition to my small collection of library quotes:

The lexicographer Wilfred Funk was once invited to say what he thought was the most beautiful word in the English language and nominated “mange.” If asked, I would without hesitation give the word “library.”
Christopher Hitchens, from his memoir Hitch-22

Speaking with Paul Holdengräber at the New York Public Library, Hitchens elaborates (at around 3:20):

“The library is a place that you have always loved.”

“Not just as a refuge from sodomy, I have to say.”

Brilliant.
